Ritual in Isolation

It is my distinct pleasure to welcome Trevor Turpin to Flash Punk with this arresting photo series “Ritual in Isolation.”
The Salt Lake City-based film photographer has a passion for creating layered cinematic photos with sensual and symbolic elements. A compilation of projects from 2020, “Ritual” finds Trevor in rare form, speaking a kind of visual tongues to our simultaneous desire for, and fear of, supernatural meaning in an irrational and relentless world.
In the photographer’s own words:
“The last five years have been quite the roller coaster ride. We live in a time where facts and science have taken the back seat. Political tribalism has reached such a level that most struggle keeping decent relationships with those they once considered close family. Civil rights issues are front and center, but our leadership is non existent. Instead, those protesting for reform, peace and justice are labeled radical, or worse, domestic terrorists. This country’s moral and ethical compass—from the top tiers of leadership to the bottom—has been thrown aside. All of this is going on while we face a pandemic that many consider a hoax. We are living in a surreal, anxiety ridden time.
“Though my work doesn’t blatantly display the issues above, the isolation and anxiety experienced from all of this pokes its head out. I am so lucky to have open minded collaborators—Noelle, Ciara, Alissa, and many more—willing to allow me to capture images of them in the most odd, unflattering ways.
“I love the irony in capturing beauty in what most would call ugly, scary, and chaotic. I guess this is how I am documenting this unprecedented time.”
