On Island Time

I’m very happy to welcome photographer Phvrvohxo (pronounced “Pharaoh”) to Flash Punk with this photo series featuring fellow Kingstonian Deedee Lyew.
Among so much else, I’m inspired by the layers of stylish decision-making in their work. Phvrvohxo has written elsewhere that there are “no fairy tale” pictures in his photography. He aims to document life, and this photo series delivers with an affecting textural realism that nevertheless invites us on a moving journey with his muse.
“It was two days after her birthday,” Phvrvohxo tells us. “We planned for the day after but I guess it was a girls night out. We almost didn’t shoot because of the weather, but since we were there we said, ‘fuck it!’ It was our first time shooting after meeting each other after like a week. Her energy is amazing. There’s something dark about her, but I don’t know what it is yet.”
“I shot this whole set with a Canon A1 and a 50mm 1:1.4 lens, using Kodak Portra 400.”
